The term "The First-Ones" describes the oldest races in the known universe. These races are at least millions years old, the Shadows and Lorien might be even older. Their technology level is far higher than that of the younger races but their vessels are not indestructible. It simply needs enough firepower and ships to destroy such a vessel.

Lorien's race seems the be the first that became sentience and acted as some kind of teacher to the other races, under them the Shadows and the Vorlons. The Shadows are far older than the Vorlons, gaining hyperspace technology about one million years earlier. Most member races of the First-Ones fought against each other during their long time of existence but at some point in time they simply chose to leave the galaxy and went beyond the Rim with only the Vorlons, the Shadows and a handful other races to remain in the galaxy.

One of these races are the "Walkers of Sigma 957". Like all other First-Ones they do not like to be bothered and chose to hide from all the younger races. It is a common fact of all First-Ones that they seem to be very conceited and don't want to have any direct contact to the younger races or to other members of the First-Ones. Susan Ivanova went on various missions to search some of the remaining First-Ones in 2260 and she only found the "Walkers of Sigma 957" with the help of Draal and the Great Machine. Even with the exact location it took some effort and luck to make contact with them.

The Vorlons and the Shadows were chosen to guide and teach the younger races but the enmity between these two races ended in several wars. They later found an agreement that the younger races "controlled" by either the Vorlons or the Shadows should fight against each other to see which point of view is the right one. Both sides began interacting with the younger races where the Vorlons finally broke the treaty by manipulating the evolution process of several races. This manipulation resulted in the appearance of telepaths which could easily be "used" to fight against the Shadows.

All of the remaining First-Ones were seen in the great battle at Coriana 6 for the last time. Vorlon, Shadows and Army of Light forces fought against each other the end a bloody war where millions of people died and entire planets were destroyed. All First-Ones left beyond the Rim after this battle and the younger races were alone in the galaxy from this point on.
