The EA Thunderbolt is the follow-up of the Starfury. The design of the fighter has been improved to provide a wider spectrum of purposes. The fighter can be equipped for dogfight, bomber and reconnaissance missions. The biggest progress compared to the older Starfury is the capability of flying in an atmosphere.

The wings are designed more planar to provide a better buoyancy. In addition to this one small wing is attached on each thruster which act as airfoils when extended.. This "feature" has first been used when Earth Alliance ships bombed the surface of Mars. Hundreds of people died during these attacks.

The Thunderbolts replaced the older Starfuries models. Some Thunderbolts are now stationed at Babylon 5, replacing the Starfuries that were destroyed in the battle between loyalist and renegade forces in 2260. The Thunderbolts were first stationed at the Omega Destroyer Churchill. The Churchill was destroyed by loyalist forces during the battle.

During the Earth Civil War even more Thunderbolt pilots changed the side and fought against President Clark. After the war many, Thunderbolts that were stationed at Babylon 5, were destroyed while defending the station against an unknown alien aggressor.
