Babylon 5 is the last of the Babylon stations. Earth decided to cut money for construction after the first four stations failed. The station is only half a mile shorter than Babylon 4 but has only living space for about 250000 people. In contrast to Babylon 4 this time a single-rotation system was used to save money.

In addition, the defense grid and fighter equipment weren't that big in size as used on Babylon 4. The defense grid was later upgraded to provide enough firepower to destroy a battle cruiser without any assistance.

The station is located in orbit around Epsilon 3 and a jumpgate has been installed in the same sector. The main aspect Babylon 5 is to act as trade and diplomacy outpost. The commander of the station has the status of an ambassador and is empowered to speak on behalf of his government the way that a ship's captain exploring new worlds is empowered.

Maintaining the station is very expensive because all goods have to be shipped using transport vessels. Every transport that wants to use Babylon 5 as docking station has to pay a certain amount of money and all people entering the station have to pay a fee. No weapons are allowed on the station except for the station security personal.

Babylon 5 is divided into several sectors which allow easy navigation in all parts of the station.

Blue Sector
This sector houses the docking bays, medlabs, Babylon 5 Advisory Council Chambers and Earth Force Personal quarters. Smaller ships usually use the docking bays inside of the station to trade their goods. The launch bays (named Cobra Bays) for the Starfuries are located along the outside of the blue sector. Other installations include Customs and Disembarkation.

Brown Sector
The brown sector is located next to the blue sector. The sector is used for transient habitation and commerce. A special section is reserved for aliens which require a special atmospheric condition.

Green Sector
The green sector is reserved for diplomatic habitation. All alien ambassadors and their assistants live and work in this sector. The meeting and conference rooms can be used by all ambassadors upon request.

Red Sector
The biggest attraction in the red sector is the garden. This garden provides at most of the food, water and fresh air for the whole station. The whole garden is about 12 square miles in size and has also some areas for recreation like a Baseball field. The second attraction is called "The Zocalo". This place is like a big shopping plaza with hotels, bars, shops and more.

Gray Sector
The Gray Sector is the industrial center of Babylon 5. All bigger facilities and construction areas are located in this sector. Only the station personal is allowed to enter this sector.

Yellow Sector
This sector is mainly located outside along the station. The front part houses the Zero-G docking bay which allows very big vessels to directly dock on Babylon 5. The middle part of this sector is used for storage and exchange of containers.

Downbelow
This slang term is used for all "unused" parts of the station where homeless people try to live.

Sinclair and Delenn

The Minbari were given the right to choose the first station commander due to the help in financing Babylon 5.

They rejected several Generals and Admirals and chose Commander Jeffrey Sinclair. Capt. John Sheridan, a hero of the Earth-Minbari-War, became the second commander after Sinclair went to Minbar.

Earth President Clark wanted a more pro-human commander and thought that Sheridan was the perfect person for this. Many Minbari were against the man who destroyed their flagship during the Earth-Minbari-War.

In 2260 Babylon 5 seceded from Earth Alliance and became an independent state on April 14, 2260, following the declaration of martial law on Earth. Shortly after this several Omega Destroyers entered Babylon 5 space and tried to seize control over the station. This was finally prevented by Minbari Ambassador Delenn.

The Earth Civil War

Babylon 5 now became the official headquarters of the Army of Light. The station was isolated from Earth and Narn took over most of the the security work on the station.

After the civil war was over and Earth was freed, Babylon 5 became the provisional headquarters of the new founded Interstellar Alliance. Capt. Sheridan was now President of this alliance and chose his former wife and Earth Force captain Elizabeth Lochley as his successor.

With the move of the Interstellar Alliance to Minbar, the station became less popular from day to day. The time of the big wars was over and so there was no need for a common space station any more. Babylon 5 was finally blown up in 2281 after being nearly 25 years in service.
