"The Babylon Project is a dream given form. It is a community which we build to create a lasting peace in the galaxy: a place where diverse populations can gather calmly without the threat of war and discuss their differences with the hope of understanding each other and settling their disagreements peacefully. Today we gather here in neutral space, in the shadow of a war that nearly cost us our civilization, to dedicate a place for all sentient beings to meet and interact openly. The Babylon Station will be built here in this orbit as a monument to those who have died in wars of misunderstandings: a place where the differences of our past can be overcome and we can live in peace with all inhabitants of the galaxy."
- Senator Calvin Natawe, 2249, at construction commencement ceremony for the Babylon Station

The Babylon Project was introduced to the Earth Senate by Calvin Natawe in 2244. After the end of the Earth-Minbari war his vision gained momentum and most people on Earth and in the Senate agreed that a space station where many races live side by side could help to prevent such wars in the future. The project was finally launched in 2249 when the construction of the Babylon Station started. Earth decided to locate the station in a neutral sector between all major races. Not everyone on Earth thought that a common station would be useful and that this would be a waste of time and resources.

Babylon Station was destroyed during construction when its infrastructure collapsed. Earth Government decided to start again and so the construction of a second space station was started. Babylon 2 was sabotaged during construction and the reaming parts of the station were abandoned. A third station was launched shortly after this but an explosion destroyed it during early construction.

The losses of the first three stations weren't very high because they occurred during the early stages. With better security and more money the construction of Babylon 4 began. This station was the biggest station ever build and went online on July 14th, 2254. 24 hours after construction was finalized, Babylon 4 disappeared.

Earth Government was willing to give up the Babylon Project when the Centauri Republic and the Minbari Federation decided to help finance the construction and maintenance of another station. Most money had been spend on the construction of Babylon 4 and so Babylon 5 became a smaller but still impressive station.

Babylon 5 went online on December 24th, 2256 and this is its story ...
